NOLA: Jazz Fest !

Marie, my college roomate, and I spent our last two spring breaks causing trouble up and down the East Coast - from Baltimore, MD to Charleston, SC to Savannah, GA. This year we decided to take it all the way South to New Orleans, LA and Jazz Fest seemed like the perfect weekend to make the trip. CJ and our friend Cliff headed down with us as well.

Looking back, there are a few things that made the trip amazing: the laid back vibe of the city, the music, the people of New Orleans, and the people I went with. Here are some highlights:

JAZZ FEST: Was an amazing time. The grounds were huge, the music was great, and the food was amazing. We had the chance to see some big name acts like Bruce Springsteen, Alabama Shakes and CJ's man crush Charles Bradley,  but some of the best concerts were local brass bands. Over the course of two days, I had a pork po'boy and quite a few crawfish meat pies.

Bourbon Street: Not a highlight necessarily, but definitely an experience! Bourbon Street was what you would expect - a huge, trashy, alcohol filled party.

French Quarter: CJ and I woke up pretty early one morning and took a street car to the French Quarter. We got there before the hoardes of tourists and caught the end of a trombone performance of Amazing Grace on the Mississippi. Then we grabbed beignets and coffee at Cafe Du Monde and walked around Jackson Square looking and art. We headed back to French Quarter a few days later with Marie and Cliff and had beignets round two on the bank of the Mississippi.  We grabbed lunch (shrimp po'boy and gumbo for me) and detoxed on a balcony overlooking the street at Johnny's Po Boys.

Frenchman Street: A very different kind of night out - a row of live Jazz Bars, all with no cover! We ate some duck and alligator sausages at Dat Dogs.

Garden District: This was a chance to see a different side of New Orleans - some gorgeous (and huge) antebellum houses. If it wasn't for the summer heat, I'd love to live in a house like these someday!
